DESIGN TIPS

Keep it Simple

  • Make your message clear and precise on your web site.

  • Faster downloading of your web site, if it takes too long for a site to load, people will move on.

  • A cleaner look will be easier to read and will have good visual presentation.

  • Make your web site easy to use, clear message so people don't have to think about what to do.

  • Make business logos bold and easy to read.

  • Avoid using music on your website. Not everyone has the same taste, and some find it annoying enough to move onto other websites.

Use of Colour on Web sites

  • Colour sets the mood of the web site.

  • Use contrasting colours for readability. Colour can make things harder or easier to read. Dark on light or vice versa is best.

  • Only use 2 or 3 colours on a web page to make it easy on the eyes and make it a clean, interesting colour palette.

  • Keep backgrounds a solid colour or a simple light coloured tile to increase downloading time.

Search Engines

  • Use key words in the body and in the titles.

  • Don't repeat words, some search engines consider this spam.

  • Make sure document titles are descriptive with main key words.

  • Include commonly misspelled keywords.

  • Use important keywords in body text.

  • Have links of all your pages on the bottom for search engines to crawl through.

Layout of Web site

  • Always plan your web site layout on paper first before designing on computer. Know what you want your web site to accomplish.

  • No more than 4 computer screens vertically per page.

  • Don't make the web page scroll horizontally.

  • Make the web site easy to navigate.

  • Put only very important information in boxes.

  • Have all your web pages connected for manageability.

  • You should have your email address available on every web page with a contact email or contact us button.

  • Make sure there are no broken links.

Use of Text

  • Use readable fonts. Some fonts are confusing to the eye. Save fancy fonts for business logos.

  • Don't center large amounts of text on the web page.

  • Avoid using blinking text.

  • Always proofread for errors, leave your work for awhile and proofread again to make sure!
